JR: “tie between me and Modano”

January 12, 2006

Via ESPN:

Q: Do you deserve the title of “Greatest American-born NHL player ever?”

A: I think it’s a tie between me and Mike Modano. In my opinion, Modano is one of the best players ever to play the game, regardless of where he was born. His talent is second to none. I have had to do it more with grit and fight and all-out work. Mike is more talented. But I think that’s a question that will be raised a lot, who is better, Mike or me.

Sure, JR.  Modano deserves consideration.  And he may even be tied….with Chris Chelios.  Or as Puck Update remarks, even another defenseman.

It’s entirely possible that this is my New York-centric Ranger bias, but in this ESPN.com Q&A with Jeremy Roenick, Roenick says the title of “greatest American-born NHL player ever” goes to either himself or Mike Modano. How is Brian Leetch not in that mix?
