What is fame?

January 11, 2006

Yesterday, I wrote a piece stating my opinion on the prison-style shaft job Alan Trammell has received from the baseball writers of America.  I found a blog called “G-thoughts” today that discusses the differences between the NHL and MLB Halls of Fame, using several Wings as points of discussion.

Think of a player that you remember as being a “star”. What groups in the history of your sport would you put him in? Is he a Top Five or Ten of any era or quality? Was he the best of an era or all-time at something? Look at how I’d place Steve Yzerman into his equivalent groups:

“Top Five Red Wings, all-time”
“Top Five Captains/Leaders”
“Top Ten Centermen”
“Top Ten Scorers of the 1980’s”
“Top Defensive Forwards of the 1990’s”
“Top Ten Clutch Players”
“Top Longetivity Players”

Those are just off the top of my head. Now, are the other guys in that group in the Hall? For example, the top five Wings are Howe, Yzerman, Sawchuk, Lindsay, and Abel. The other four are in, and Stevie will be as well.
