Prospect report: future is bright

Wings detractors have whined the last decade that Detroit’s success has been due exclusively to the large checkbook of Mr. I. 

Naturally, they discount European scouting that is acknowledgd as the league’s best (Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Holmstrom, Fischer, Grigorenko, Flippula, Hudler), shrewd trades/signings (Maltby, Draper, Murphy, Rouse, Vernon, Cleary) and a commitment by management to treat their players well.

So, it may come as a surprise–even though we bring it up every chance we can–that the Wings’ farm system is absolutely thriving.  According to


“If success of a franchise’s farm club is a good measure of the wealth of its prospects, the Detroit Red Wings may be in good shape.”


HF also gives very high marks for the stable of goalies the Wings have stockpiled.
